SHODAN

Please refer to the "Testing Requirements for GoJuRyu KarateDo" to familiarize yourself with the expectations for the student pursuing this rank.  As in any art studied here the student should know the true meaning of this rank as it pertains to Judo.  I refer the student to being very familiar with Jigoro Kano's writings in the 1937 publication "The New Art of Judo" which may be read but never taken out of the dojo.  The goal of Judo is not championships.  The founder of Nihon Jujutsu, Shizuya Sato, Ninth Dan Judo told us, during a training session in Japan that Kano Sensei would not like what Judo had become with too much competition and not enough emphasis on mutual benefit through cooperative training.  This, then, is the attitude you need and not flexing because you outwrestle another student.

The physical requirements, during this test, will be focus on stamina.  Shodan rank in Judo should be one that demonstrates the student's knowledge of energy conservation during Rondori as much as physical skill.  Please be prepared to demonstrate both.
